B201 | Infusing Db2 for z/OS with AI: Hands–on Lab with IBM Db2 AI 1.6 for z/OS
Sunday June 8, 2025 9:00am - 12:30pm EDT
Modern hybrid cloud infrastructures are becoming too complex for humans to manage efficiently and effectively. Shortage of experienced Db2 for z/OS professionals is further exacerbating the situation. This warrants a need for embracing AI and automation to augment human intervention to ensure the highest achievable availability and performance for Db2® for z/OS® systems. IBM Db2® AI for z/OS® ("Db2ZAI") provides three key features. 1. SQL Optimization – This empowers the optimizer in your Db2 for z/OS engine to determine the best–performing query access paths with performance validation based on your workload characteristics 2. System Assessment – This detects Db2 system performance exceptions and provides recommended actions for tuning which are based on your environment. 3. Distributed Connection Control (DCC) – This provides protection for Db2 for z/OS from unintentional disruptions and intrusions that can originate from remote applications This Hands–on Lab covers these main features provided by Db2ZAI.

B7 | Diamonds are Forever – Real–World SQL Data Insight Experiences
Tuesday June 10, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Join me on a journey through our first year of deploying SQL Data Insights (SDI) into production. Discover how SDI impacted our business processes, changed stakeholder perceptions of the mainframe, and enhanced our approach to data analysis.
We will start with a review of our first use case and discuss the resources consumed for training and scoring, as well as the impact SDI had on our business processes.
SDI's most evident benefit is its ability to analyze data where it sits without having to export, transfer and reload it, and with minimal data science dependency. But how does it compare to more traditional approaches? To answer that, we'll compare SDI with other machine learning algorithms by applying them to a frequently used dataset for predicting diamond prices. We'll delve into the accuracy of the algorithms and see how SDI stacks up against data scientists' most loved algorithms.
Following that, we'll explore a brand–new use case that applies the new commonality–function in Db2 FL504. We'll discuss its usefulness, resource requirements, and potential impact on business processes, providing more practical insights into the power of SDI.
And finally, I'll share a use case that demonstrates how to identify outliers using SDI with Db2 monitoring data, ready to be applied in your own shop.
Don't miss this opportunity to gain practical insights into the power of SDI and how it can transform your data analysis!

B8 | IBM Db2 for AI: Building AI Systems with Db2
Tuesday June 10, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
Relational databases serve as the primary data source for enterprise AI projects. Traditionally, when an AI project requires data from a relational database, engineers duplicate the data onto a separate system for model development and inference. However, this duplication process presents various challenges, including network latency, complex data governance, and the need for multiple APIs. These challenges often impede the successful implementation of AI models in production for many enterprise projects. To address these obstacles, IBM Db2 offers in–database AI capabilities and external tools. With Db2, ML practitioners can create and deploy AI models directly within their databases, significantly simplifying the complexities of AI pipelines. By leveraging in–db AI features, enterprises can safeguard sensitive data, expedite inferencing processes, and seamlessly integrate AI models with downstream business applications. In this talk, I will present the AI capabilities and tools provided by Db2. I will showcase how these capabilities can be effectively utilized in upcoming AI projects, demonstrating their potential to transform enterprise AI implementations.

B9 | Bridging the Db2 for z/OS Skill Gap with Generative AI
Tuesday June 10, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
Generative AI presents a transformative opportunity to address the knowledge and skill gap in mainframe environments, particularly for Db2 for z/OS. By leveraging large language models (LLM) and Retrieval–Augmented Generation (RAG) patterns, organizations can create intelligent systems that make mainframe expertise more accessible and actionable. When integrated with automation frameworks, these solutions not only simplify complex workflows for early tenure DBAs —reducing the steep learning curve—but also enable experienced DBAs to focus on strategic, high–value tasks. This session explores how generative AI can be applied to enhance mainframe productivity, preserve institutional knowledge, and create a scalable foundation for skills development across diverse user groups.

B15 | Understand, Manage and Love Certificates in z/OS and USS
Thursday June 12, 2025 10:10am - 11:10am EDT
Understand, manage and love certificates in z/OS and USS, will address distributed Db2 access. You can communicate with z/OS, USS, Db2, or any other server or service via “postcards”, or “sealed envelopes”. Even within a trusted network, unencrypted postcard communication isn’t state of the art and may compromise information you don’t intend to share.
Web–based solutions, like ZOWE, UMS, ADF,… require secure connections, but the setup can be frustrating. Setting up and using encrypted channels isn’t rocket science, but they’re all based on certificates that some people find difficult to manage. This session sheds light on secure communication and their implementation in z/OS and USS services. I’ll explain how secure communication is set up, established and managed, as well as understanding difficulties that may arise.

IBM Db2 offers a wide range of AI features, both built–in and external tools, for creating AI systems and solutions. These include over 200 built–in AI stored procedures and tools that work seamlessly with open–source AI ecosystems. In this workshop, participants will explore Db2’s AI support and use a selection of these features to implement practical AI models. The workshop consists of two parts. In the first module, participants will learn how to develop a supervised AI model using Db2’s built–in AI stored procedures. The entire model development and usage will be done using SQL within the database. In the second module, participants will learn how to create a Python model using popular Python packages outside of the database, and then deploy that model back into a Db2 database. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained fundamental skills and hands–on experience in utilizing these AI capabilities. They will be able to apply these skills to their future AI projects. This workshop is designed to be beginner–friendly and does not require participants to have extensive knowledge in AI. Basic SQL skills and some Python programming skills are sufficient for attending and benefiting from this workshop.
