D2 | How to Recover When Recovery Seems Impossible
Monday June 9, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Db2 professionals spend a significant amount of time preparing for the worst–case scenarios. How many image copies do you take daily? How much space do these image copies occupy?
The primary reason for taking backups is to facilitate recovery. However, there are times when we face recovery situations and find that we cannot perform the recovery as outlined in our training or manuals.
This presentation will explore alternatives to typical Db2 recovery methods, with the top priority being the recovery of broken, invalid, or compromised Db2 objects. We will discuss various redirected recovery techniques and their applications.
Over the years, Db2 releases have enhanced recovery capabilities to address data availability and retention. This presentation will explain how these changes can impact recovery strategies.
Attendees will leave with new insights and methods for accessing and recovering Db2 data.

E2 | Db2 DDF and DBATs and Connections Re–Explained from a User Perspective
Monday June 9, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Distributed client applications (from a server) are the most important and common of new workload using Db2 Z.
There are many concepts and terms thrown around which we often too often gloss over without a complete understanding.
This presentation will re–explain basic terms from my user perspective plus share some experiences learned (the hard way?) over recent years.

This presentation covers THREADS and DBATS and CONNECTION.
Db2 command DISPLAY DDF DETAIL will show valuable information about current DBAT usage (in–use and disconnected).
Db2 command DISPLAY THREAD LOCATION(*) will show information about all the in–use DBAT (active, disconnecting or connecting).
Db2 itself monitors current in–use DBATS and spits out interesting message DSNL077I when in–use DBAT reaches 85% of MAXDBAT.  This is an important clue that something is probably going wrong!
Db2 statistics tell us all the same meta data about DBAT info.  Reviewing Db2 statistics, via a good Db2 performance database, can provide reports and trends on DBAT usage over time along with CPU consumption by DDF
The presentation will end with my user experience of an application issue of hitting max in–use DBAT and understanding what was going on!

D3 | Index Modernization in Db2 for z/OS: Because Things Have Changed the Past 20 Years!
Monday June 9, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
As technology evolves and data volumes surge, the same indexing strategies that worked well 20 years ago are probably no longer optimal. This presentation exposes the critical need for index modernization in Db2 for z/OS applications.
We’ll start by reviewing the critical role of indexes and their history in Db2 for z/OS to set the stage. Then we’ll take a look at the many innovations IBM has applied to indexes in Db2 for z/OS over the past few releases including things like index compression, Fast Traverse Blocks (FTBs), and index features like include columns and indexing on expressions.
With a sound foundation of the recent index capabilities under our belts, we’ll discuss changing data patterns and their impact on indexing. Topics we’ll discuss include big data and analytics, the impact of data growth, and the surge in dynamic SQL.
And we’ll also show how to capture SQL usage (both static and dynamic) to design optimal indexes based on actual usage and access patterns.
By understanding these factors and adopting modern indexing techniques, organizations can significantly enhance the performance, scalability, and overall efficiency of their Db2 for z/OS applications and systems.

E5 | Don’t have an SQL Monitor? You Might Need a Bigger Shovel
Monday June 9, 2025 4:30pm - 5:30pm EDT
Running Db2 on z/OS without a monitor is like driving a car without a speedometer or gas gauge; it’s something you need.   While monitoring at the subsystem level is important, you may ask yourself, do I really need a method of monitoring SQL?  You can try to export the Dynamic Statement Cache, or start an expensive SQL trace within your subsystem monitoring tool, but when there’s a problem, you need a quick and easy way to monitor the SQL statements.  You don’t want to recreate the issue; you want to go back in time to find out what happened.  The key software vendors for Db2 have a tool that monitors SQL.
If you're new to Db2, just purchased a monitoring tool or maybe you don't have a tool at all, come listen to this session.  As a Db2 DBA most of my life, I'll go over the key reasons why you need to monitor your SQL.  Without an SQL monitoring tool:

Can you quickly determine the most expensive SQL statement on your subsystem?
Are you able to list all SQL statements within a package, sorted by most expensive in terms of getpages, CPU or elapsed times?
Do you receive alerts and email notes telling you there’s a resource unavailable condition or that a package failed?
Can you see who stopped your tablespace in production?

Monitoring an SQL statement is different than monitoring a Db2 thread in your subsystem monitor.  In this presentation, I’ll show you key metrics I look for.  Should you look at total getpage activity per query or the average number of getpages?  What are the delays telling me?  Are there certain SQL codes we should be monitoring?
Would extracting the host variables help in resolving SQL Code 100 return codes where no records are found?  While I will be using the IBM Db2 Query Monitor tool for screen shots, I hope to cover SQL accounting data used by all vendor tools.

A6 | Pedal to The Metal – This is Not your Daddy's Accelerator!
Tuesday June 10, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am EDT
The IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS(IDAA) has evolved enormously over the last 14 years since its introduction to the DB2 for z/OS world with the result that the IDAA of 2025 is a completely different proposition to customers compared to when it was originally presented to the market back in 2011.
As with many new functions and features of Db2 introduced over the years, it was not love at first with the IDAA, however, it is no longer a stand–alone Netezza appliance with periodic refreshes, limited SQL compatibility and limited use cases.  It is in fact a completely different hardware and software solution with multiple deployment options from IFLs on Z, a z/Linux One machine or even in cloud and it is also a completely new software based on the columnar DB2 BLU DW engine.
What this means for customers is that the IDAA of 2025 with lots more functionality and flexibility has become an extremely interesting and feasible solution to the many challenges that customers are facing from classical Analytical applications to Batch processing and OLTP transactions requiring analytical queries on real–time data.
This presentation will provide a brief overview of the changes to IDAA since its introduction explaining what and how these changes make the IDAA a completely different proposition for customers in 2025.
More importantly, the presentation will provide a technical explanation of how you can perform an assessment of your environment to be able to evaluate the potential benefits of IDAA in your shop, or, if you already have an IDAA, how you can identify new candidates for IDAA processing.
Finally, the presentation will provide tips and insights from real–world use cases highlighting not only the benefits but also the errors to avoid and the potential problems that you may encounter when offloading work to IDAA.

C6 | DB2 LUW PureScale – Custom Disaster Recovery Configuration
Tuesday June 10, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am EDT
IBM provides us number of solution to achieve multisite HA/DR for PureScale clusters. Those include technologies like HADR Replication for PureScale Clusters, Geographically Dispersed PureScale Clusters, GPFS replication for PureScale Clusters, Q Replication for PureScale Clusters.
In the presentation we will describe alternative approach, where replication across 2 sites is provided by Storage Array Layer, which allows us to achieve additional benefits like consistency groups going beyond single GPFS filesystem used by the PureScale, optimized network utilization where Storage Array replication happens on SAN Fiber, additional HA layer where filesystem can be cross mounted across sites which gives additional redundancy layer for storage availability.

We implement solution by deploying Synchronic Storage Replication across 2 sites, where SAN fabric provides us NSD multi path connections from each side. This way on each side we have collection of NSD disks that are local to given side, and also connection to remote NSD disks from DR side. On both sites we install standalone PureScale clusters, independent from each, therefore failure of any of those clusters does not impact other side counterpart. Having 2 clusters we designate one as primary by creating PureScale managed GPFS on top of Storage Array Layer, and on top of that create Database with its' associated paths. Next we use gpfssync capabilities to export primary GPFS filesystem , and next mount the same on DR site. This allows us to mimic primary cluster on DR site, and next attach those synchronized mount points to TSAMP cluster on secondary site. Later on, we just move application connection to DR site, which can handle further ongoing workloads.

Proposed solution is active–passive deployment, when at any given time only one cluster has connection to synchronized storage array. We achieve this by protections on each layer (NSD disks active on one site only, GPFS mounts online on one site only, database cataloging on one site only). This is crucial to ensure only one side has active writes to the cluster, so that we prevent any corruption of the data. In the presentation we provide procedures to setup such deployment, along with failover procedures where we move storage attachment from primary to secondary, and reverse. We also provide testing results where we verify solution, by forcing failover and more failure scenarios while processing application workload.

B7 | Diamonds are Forever – Real–World SQL Data Insight Experiences
Tuesday June 10, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Join me on a journey through our first year of deploying SQL Data Insights (SDI) into production. Discover how SDI impacted our business processes, changed stakeholder perceptions of the mainframe, and enhanced our approach to data analysis.
We will start with a review of our first use case and discuss the resources consumed for training and scoring, as well as the impact SDI had on our business processes.
SDI's most evident benefit is its ability to analyze data where it sits without having to export, transfer and reload it, and with minimal data science dependency. But how does it compare to more traditional approaches? To answer that, we'll compare SDI with other machine learning algorithms by applying them to a frequently used dataset for predicting diamond prices. We'll delve into the accuracy of the algorithms and see how SDI stacks up against data scientists' most loved algorithms.
Following that, we'll explore a brand–new use case that applies the new commonality–function in Db2 FL504. We'll discuss its usefulness, resource requirements, and potential impact on business processes, providing more practical insights into the power of SDI.
And finally, I'll share a use case that demonstrates how to identify outliers using SDI with Db2 monitoring data, ready to be applied in your own shop.
Don't miss this opportunity to gain practical insights into the power of SDI and how it can transform your data analysis!

D10 | Db2 13 for z/OS: Using the Profile Tables to Monitor and Enforce Security Requirements for DDF Applications
Wednesday June 11, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am EDT
The Db2 for z/OS profile tables have long been helpful for managing a DDF workload in a granular (e.g., application–specific) way, regarding matters such as connection, thread, and idle thread timeout limits. Some fairly recent Db2 13 APARs have extended profile table functionality to include monitoring and enforcement of security requirements for DDF–using applications. This new capability can be leveraged to greatly reduce the risk of application disruption related to implementation of a new DDF application security requirement, such as a requirement for certificate–based (versus password–based) client authentication, or a requirement for use of AT/TLS encryption (commonly known as SSL encryption). In this session, you'll get a quick refresher on Db2 profile table functionality, and you'll learn about the enhancements provided by the aforementioned Db2 13 APARs. We'll explore some scenarios for advantageous exploitation of the new profile table functionality, and we will highlight a real–world example of putting profile table security functionality to work.

E10 | “A LOB for friend. Know me a little better “
Wednesday June 11, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am EDT
This is a back–to–basics session that will cover the fundamentals of Db2 Large Objects (LOBs), their structure, different LOB types, how they are implemented, considerations for daily management and how it is possible to Improve application performance transforming standard lobs to Inline Lobs.
Db2 LOBs enable you to store large amounts of data in a single column. The data can be structured in nature, but more often contain unstructured data such as images or audio data. LOB implementation requires auxiliary objects to be created, which increases the complexity of object administration, space utilization, and utility processing.
This session provides an overview of Db2 LOBs, things to watch out for, and tips for tuning and space allocation.
Objectives:1.    Provide an overview of LOB types, and how they are structured and implemented.2.    Provide tips for performance tuning and space utilization using the Inline Lobs.3.    How to avoid LOB data corruption scenarios and ensure data integrity.

A12 | From the Statement Cache with Love
Wednesday June 11, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
In today's modern applications, workload is increasingly shifting from traditional CICS or IMS transactions to Java workload. As a result, analyzing dynamic queries has become more important than ever before.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate how to systematically analyze dynamic queries using the Global Dynamic Statement Cache, and how to identify queries that require immediate attention. We will develop a tool that allows SQL developers to analyze dynamic queries in their shop from day one after the conference. This tool is designed to be easily accessible and user–friendly, without requiring access to the mainframe. With it, developers can answer typical questions such as "Which queries performed better or worse within the last 30 days?", "Which of my queries were running at a given time and how did they perform?", and "Which of my queries are getting slower over time?" in a self–service mode. Additionally, we will explore how to translate query tuning results to cash savings, demonstrating the financial benefits of query optimization. By the end of this presentation, you will have a clear understanding of how to uncover and monetize hidden insights by analyzing the Global Dynamic Statement Cache.

Thursday June 12, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am EDT
In this session, you will learn how to capture SQL statistics from Db2’s dynamic statement cache and how to combine them with the information from your EXPLAIN tables. The code that we use will be available for download after the session. Discover how to identify the queries that will benefit most from tuning, allowing you to focus your valuable time on those that matter. We start with simple metrics like RID list errors and work our way up to other performance metrics like top consumers, I/O statistics, lock contention, and more. You will learn how to track the performance and resource consumption of a given SQL statement over time, which makes it possible to spot trends. Finally, we will show how to detect access path changes in dynamic SQL workload. This is a common problem in environments with heavy dynamic workload. Something as simple as a single RUNSTATS execution on one of the involved tables can causeunexpected changes to the access path that Db2 chooses. Using historic explain information, these changes become visible, and you can take immediate action.

Even within a trusted network, unencrypted postcard communication isn’t state of the art and may compromise information you don’t intend to share.
Web–based solutions, like ZOWE, UMS, ADF,… require secure connections, but the setup can be frustrating. Setting up and using encrypted channels isn’t rocket science, but they’re all based on certificates that some people find difficult to manage. This session sheds light on secure communication and their implementation in z/OS and USS services. I’ll explain how secure communication is set up, established and managed, as well as understanding difficulties that may arise.

Db2 administrator personas can execute some of their daily tasks in a more intuitive way via Db2 Administration Foundation and its integration with Db2 Tuning Services, Query Workload Tuner and IDAA Administration services. Last but not least, administrators can also benefit from Db2 DevOps experience (DBaaS) to “shift–left” database operations to application developers under their rules and administrative directives.
Db2 application developer personas can develop / test and deploy application changes that also require database change in a speed that business demand. Using Db2 Developer Extension in IDE will simplify coding of SQL including native stored procedure code. Using Db2 DevOps Experience services (DBaaS), developers can, on demand, self–service database operations under the rules previously established by the Db2 administrators.
