This 3.5-day foundational course introduces the essentials of Db2 12.1 for relational DBAs, covering architecture, installation, configuration, and basic database management. It then builds on these core essentials with topics such as data movement, backup and recovery, and routine maintenance to ensure performance and integrity. Designed for new and transitioning DBAs, the course emphasizes hands-on learning with minimal prerequisites beyond basic SQL and database knowledge.

Note: There is no certification for the foundational course, but students can take a proctored quiz after the class to obtain the badge.

This course does not cover distributed data processing, nor does it cover data sharing.

Databases keep growing. Many applications do not need the older data at certain age, which could vary from a few days to a few years. Reducing the DB size can not only save storage, but also the backup/restore time, and more importantly improves the database performance, in most cases. But, DELETE/REORG has always been a nightmare to DBAs, specially on large databases. This presentation demonstrates a working system which purges the older data from DB2 databases, FAST (in seconds/minutes), with NO System down, NO DELETE/REORG involvement, which is pretty much independent of the database size. The system also provides the option of old–data–archive before purging.

The Db2 for z/OS profile tables have long been helpful for managing a DDF workload in a granular (e.g., application–specific) way, regarding matters such as connection, thread, and idle thread timeout limits. Some fairly recent Db2 13 APARs have extended profile table functionality to include monitoring and enforcement of security requirements for DDF–using applications. This new capability can be leveraged to greatly reduce the risk of application disruption related to implementation of a new DDF application security requirement, such as a requirement for certificate–based (versus password–based) client authentication, or a requirement for use of AT/TLS encryption (commonly known as SSL encryption). In this session, you'll get a quick refresher on Db2 profile table functionality, and you'll learn about the enhancements provided by the aforementioned Db2 13 APARs. We'll explore some scenarios for advantageous exploitation of the new profile table functionality, and we will highlight a real–world example of putting profile table security functionality to work.

This is a back–to–basics session that will cover the fundamentals of Db2 Large Objects (LOBs), their structure, different LOB types, how they are implemented, considerations for daily management and how it is possible to Improve application performance transforming standard lobs to Inline Lobs.
Db2 LOBs enable you to store large amounts of data in a single column. The data can be structured in nature, but more often contain unstructured data such as images or audio data. LOB implementation requires auxiliary objects to be created, which increases the complexity of object administration, space utilization, and utility processing.

In today's modern applications, workload is increasingly shifting from traditional CICS or IMS transactions to Java workload. As a result, analyzing dynamic queries has become more important than ever before.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate how to systematically analyze dynamic queries using the Global Dynamic Statement Cache, and how to identify queries that require immediate attention. We will develop a tool that allows SQL developers to analyze dynamic queries in their shop from day one after the conference. This tool is designed to be easily accessible and user–friendly, without requiring access to the mainframe. With it, developers can answer typical questions such as "Which queries performed better or worse within the last 30 days?", "Which of my queries were running at a given time and how did they perform?", and "Which of my queries are getting slower over time?" in a self–service mode. Optimal access plans are critical for query performance, and it is the Db2 optimizer's job to choose the best one. The optimizer is very sophisticated and considers many factors while costing an access plan, but sometimes it makes mistakes, and you need to fix it quickly. This session will show you how to apply access plan tuning techniques based on queries from real Db2 customer systems. This 2025 edition of the session will cover brand new examples compared to the 2024 edition. A variety of query types will be covered, including OLTP and analytics, running on single or multiple data base partitions. You will also learn how to use the explain facility to understand how access plans work. Attend this session to learn some techniques to address a variety of access plan problems and to gain some insight into query optimization.
